We’ve all been there before— that phase where, momentarily, we begin putting less effort into our haircare, only to realise that we’re stuck in a hair rut, having worn the same old look for days on end now. Before you plan a drastic haircut or book that hair colour appointment at the salon, here is an easy alternative that is achievable from the comfort of your home. And no, we’re not talking about a DIY haircut with a pair of scissors.
A cute hairdo has the power to tie a whole outfit together, elevate a basic one, and have you looking polished under minutes. Here are five trendy, low maintenance hairstyles that are guaranteed to deliver maximum effect with minimal effort, irrespective of your hair length or texture.
1. Space Buns
It was in 1977 that Princess Leia first introduced the world to her iconic space buns. The twisted, double buns went on to become a pop culture favourite, continuing to appear in sitcoms (remember Rachel in Friends?) and on red carpets. Today, iterations of this quirky hairdo are dominating our social media feeds. Try this look when you’re feeling particularly playful. Simply part your hair in the middle and roll up two buns on both sides. Finish off with fun (sparky, maybe) pins and a couple of face-framing strands in the front.
2. Mini Braids
Nostalgia alert! Mini braids used to be a Y2K staple and are now back in a major way. And with good reason too— this easy-to-achieve hairstyle can serve as an instant pick-me-up for any look, besides being easy on the pocket. As it turns out, braids protect your hair from frizz and breakage, making this the perfect hairstyle for long hair. Plus, you can choose to go big with mini braids all over or play it subtly with a few face-framing braids on both sides of your hair-parting. Should you wish to embrace the Y2K vibe in all its glory, throw in some hair accessories like colourful beads to secure the ends of your braids.
3. Low Messy Bun
As timeless as it is effortless, this hairstyle is a bona fide classic. Messy buns have retained their popularity from the 90s to now and we’re still in love. This is also a great hairstyle for short hair. A well-executed messy bun looks chic and cute, and just imperfect enough to add an air of nonchalance. To achieve this look, tie your hair in a ponytail, tease out the pony and wrap it around the hair tie. Secure the bun with another hair tie or a scrunchie and some bobby pins, and you’re done! The best part? This one is dry shampoo friendly and does not need your hair to be freshly washed. Day 3 of greasiness? Bring it on.
4.The Half Bun
Another no-wash winner, this simple hairstyle can come to your rescue when you’re in too much of a rush for a whole styling routine but still need to look cute and put-together. And when we say low on the effort, we really mean it. Take up hair from the upper portion of your scalp and twist it into a bun at the top. Fix it in place with a few bobby pins and you’re good to go. But how high should the bun be? How big? How much hair should you leave out at the back? Well, just go with your gut— intuitively decide what works for your hair length and face shape.
5. Claw Clip Up-do
Nothing makes a statement like an extra-large, brightly coloured claw clip worn over messy hair. Another 90’s and Y2K essential, the claw clip is back, and it’s super convenient, especially for the hotter days. Just tie your hair back and secure it with a medium or large claw clip; you can twist it completely and put it up with a large one or double up in case you have considerable length.
