Listen up millennials, the ‘20s are all about keeping up with Gen Z. This generation plays the game differently, especially when it comes to experimenting with beauty. Millennials can be credited with taking makeup looks to a whole new level with contouring, highlighting, microblading their brows, embracing false lashes – whatever it takes to get that social media perfection. Gen Z makeup is all about not taking yourself or your look too seriously and leaving space for some imperfection.
Here are six Gen Z trends that are fun, playful and easy to embrace!
#1 - Glazed & Frosted Eyes
Eye makeup looks were all about slapping on some intense glitter and calling it a day. Not anymore. The kids these days are opting for a subtle glaze that’s brought about by a neutral eyeshadow on the base paired with a frosty, metallic shimmer. Pair this with lips in the same neutral as your base eyeshadow to really make those eyes pop.
#2 - Plumped Pouts
Millennials have perfected the art of contouring to achieve the ultimate chisel. Why not elevate this technique and use it on your lips?
Create shadows by overlining your lips, especially at your cupid’s bow, for a fuller looking pout. Use a lip liner in a shade darker than your lips towards the edges and a lighter one in the middle to create this illusion. Highlight this look with a clear or neutral gloss and you’re good to go!
#3 - Starry Eyes
The Euphoria frenzy continues but not without an upgrade! Begin your eyes with a neutral base topped off with some shimmer. Then, finely line your lids – maybe with a chrome liner – and define with a mini wing. Finish this look with tiny rhinestones at the end of your eyes, in any pattern that you like.
Pro tip: Raid your mom’s vanity for her tiny silver bindis to achieve the same look
#4 - Foxy Eyes
The foxy eye makeup look is a minimal take on the classic cat-eye that lifts your eyes like no other. To nail this viral trend, simply follow the natural contours of your eye to extend sharp, fine wings on both the inner and outer corners while leaving the middle portion of your lid bare. Use a coloured liner for a bold makeup look.
#5 - Colour Wash
Add a pop of colour to your otherwise neutral makeup. Pick your favourite shade – it can be a pastel or an earthy tone – and apply it as a subtle wash on your lids. Make sure you go for a lipstick in a complementary if not similar shade to recreate this fun yet subtle makeup look. All you need to finish off this look is mascara and a clear gloss.
#6 - High-Shine Lips
Gloss is having its moment in the sun, and has become the go- to for those leaning toward a natural makeup look. Invest in a high shine gloss – it could be tinted or clear – and use either on your natural lips or over your favourite lip colour. Wrap things up with a hint of blush, some mascara and a chrome highlighter. This fresh, clean look is the Gen Z version of no-makeup makeup and we’re loving it!
