The big short: the most popular hair styles of 2023

Chances are, you’re perched on a salon chair facing the mirror of reality checks and revivals while your hairstylist urges you to consider a drastic cut to change up your look. In 2023, however, they might have a point. Short haircuts are staging a resurgence this summer and with good reason: they are effortless, edgy, and empowering.

In your quest to find the perfect short haircut for the summer of ‘23, you’ll probably begin investigating the Internet while the hairstylist inspects your tousled tresses. However, finding a look that fulfills your desire to cross paths with this trend while also having it work for you can be a tad bit overwhelming.

The long and short of it: look no further. If a hot girl summer is on the agenda and you’re looking to chop off a few inches (or more!) , Tira shortlists 7 popular trims for you to choose from:

1. Bob with bangs

A bob with bangs is a versatile short hairstyle: it can be worn to look sleek and smooth or be textured and messy.

What to tell your hairstylist:

I’d like a bob haircut that falls just above my shoulders with straight across bangs that are above my eyebrows. Please make the ends slightly layered to add some movement to my hair.

2. The Bixie

The Bixie combines the edginess of a mullet with the softness of a pixie. Let the pro pick a flattering length and give you face-framing layers.

What to tell your hairstylist:

I’m interested in a longer pixie cut that’s slightly short on top and longer on the bottom.

3. French bob

Known as ‘French-Girl Bob’, this cut may well be named after Taylor Lashae, who has put this summer hair trend on the map.

What to tell your hairstylist:

Could you give me a chin-length bob with an A-line shape? I want the back to be slightly shorter than the front and the layers to be textured with soft waves that frame my face.

4. 90’s lob

This modern take on an iconic lob, i.e. a long bob doesn’t just belong in the 90’s. It makes for a chic summer haircut for modern times, too!

What to tell your hairstylist:

I want a lob that hits just above my shoulders with choppy layers and face-framing pieces. Please create some volume on top and leave longer pieces on the ends for a 90’s-inspired look.

5. The chopped pixie

No one but Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman comes to mind when one thinks of the pixie. This daringly edgy style is all about easy hair care and maintenance.

What to tell your hairstylist:

A classic piece cut with short, choppy layers across my head is what I’m looking for. Please ensure that it’s balanced and symmetrical and leave some longer pieces on top for versatility.

6. Bedhead

The IRL look of Netflix’s Wednesday Addams, Jenna Ortega, is reason enough for you to opt for this short summer haircut.

What to tell your hairstylist:

I was thinking of a messy, textured haircut with choppy layers that look undone and effortless. Please create some random shorter pieces throughout and add texture for a ruffled look.

7. Curly wolf cut

Shaggy, but with incomparable texture and volume, the curly wolf cut makes a statement as a summer hairstyle.

What to tell your hairstylist:

What I have in mind is a layered shag with lots of volume on top. Can you create a choppy cut with long layers on top and short on the bottom? Please add some bangs to frame my face.

So, what’re you waiting for? Crop it like it’s hot!
