Kajal is more than an eye makeup essential for Indian women. The cultural meaning and religious connection around the use of kajal dates back to ancient times when it was believed to ward off the evil eye. Considered a symbol of beauty unique to Indian women, it helps enhance the natural shape of the eye and create a statement look. However, given their soft, creamy, oil-based texture, kajals tend to be prone to smudging and fading. Additional factors like oily skin, sweating, humidity, and accidentally rubbing the eyes also contribute to the short-lived lifespan of the kajal. 1. Opt for waterproof formulas:
While the kajals from your teen years might not have lived up to your expectations, modern iterations come in waterproof and long-lasting formulations. Label-check your kohls for ingredients like silicone, beeswax, and dimethicone that create a barrier on the skin, preventing any moisture from penetrating the kajal and causing it to smudge. They are excellent at repelling water and oil to stay put for longer hours.
2. Prep your eyes:
There’s no such thing as a perfect smudge-proof kajal; you have to make it so. Start by moisturising your skin with a lightweight formula and skip the eye cream if you are planning to wear a kajal instead of a liquid or pencil liner. Prep your lids with an eyeshadow primer to give them a tacky base.
3. Be mindful of the quantity:
It’s a myth that the darker the kajal, the more you’ll be protected from the evil eye. Heavy kajal also doesn’t bode well for long-lasting wear, as applying too much increases the chances of smudging. Stick to one or two swipes to get the product on your lids. If the product is old and not as smooth as before, warm up the tip by blowing hot air on it ( a hair drier will come in handy for this one!) before applying the kohl stick.
4. Let it dry:
The golden rule for preventing your makeup from pilling or smudging is to allow it to rest between steps. The same applies to your kajal as well. Post application, allow it to dry as much as possible. Not allowing the kohl to dry fully before applying other products can also cause it to smudge.
5. Set it in place:
Given that you wear your kajal without necessarily doing a full face of makeup, it will be helpful to set it with a setting spray especially developed for this purpose. You can also stack a thin layer of translucent powder over it once it has dried. This helps to set the kohl in place and extend its wear time throughout the day. Opt for products that are labelled ophthalmologist-tested and safe to use on the delicate skin around the eyes. Lightly spritz a scanty amount over the finished look and allow it to dry before heading out.
