Summers mean different things to different people. For a beauty enthusiast, summers can be a fun time for experimentation. From cool and quirky neon pop colours to solid colour blocking and pastel infusions, eye makeup makes for the perfect case to get creative with beauty and explore endless looks.
However, the euphoria of acing a 10/10 eye makeup look doesn’t last for long during summers, thanks to the humidity and sweltering temperatures which seriously put your eye makeup at risk of melting away.
We speak to celebrity makeup artist Tanvi Marathe who sounds off her tried-and-tested tips to increase the longevity of your eye makeup.
1. Don’t sleep on an eyelid primer:
Many people skimp over a primer for eyelids. However, Tanvi Marathe suggests not to do that. “On the eyelids, the skin can get oily easily. When you put a powder eye shadow on such [oily] lids, the makeup will disintegrate soon after application,” says Marathe, who also blames oiliness for the declining longevity of your eye makeup. Her top eye shadow/eyelid primer recommendations are from M.A.C ad Too Faced. In a simplified sense, eyelid primers, such as the PAC Eyeshadow Primer, control the (disruptive) sebum secretion on the eyelids that can instantaneously start breaking down the makeup.
2. Make the best of your base makeup:
“What we, as makeup artists, also do on most of our clients is use either a concealer or a foundation (depending on the intensity of pigmentation) and set that in place with a mattifying translucent powder,” says Marathe. “What this does is first — it doesn’t let the oils surface on the skin, and second — since the pigmentation has been covered and the skin tone has been evened out, the colour pay-off of the eye shadows is also better.”
3. Cream eye shadow for the win:
Marathe suggests opting for cream eye shadows over powder eyeshadows during summers for they wear easily, blend effortlessly and also double up as a primer in case you plan on layering a powder eye shadow on top for a bolder look. “I like going in with a cream base first, and then dab powder eye shadow (from the same colour family, of course) on top; what this does is that it makes for a sticky base to promote longer wear,” shares Marathe. However, beware of the order of application, recommends Marathe. “In case you’re wearing base makeup, don’t apply a translucent powder on top if you plan to add a cream eye shadow. Apply all the cream-based products first and then set them with a powder/eye shadow,” advises the makeup expert.
4. Softer, the better:
Marathe is an advocate of using lighter-toned eyeshadows such as rose gold, champagne or cream colours during summers to avoid bleeding eye makeup. “There’s a reason why you don’t see a lot of people donning a smokey eye makeup look on summery days,” affirms Marathe. Plus, not only are such subtle and muted colours appropriate for AM to PM wear, but also don’t leave you (or your eyelids) heavy.
5. Waterproof or nothing:
Cop all waterproof products, as a rule of thumb, to triumph over the sweat on these hot days “If you happen to use a kajal that is not waterproof, then set it with an eye shadow in a similar colour of the kajal,” says Marathe, sharing a handy tip. In any case, if you want to avoid stinging, burning or racoon eyes, stick to waterproof/water-resistant eye makeup products.
