Although often overlooked, giving your feet some extra care is as important as caring for any other body part. The foot goes through substantial wear and tear daily and should be included in our skincare routines because the nails, heels, and toes can harden through constant pressure and prolonged neglect. The pressure points are particularly vulnerable, and if left unchecked, they tend to create long-standing problems. Improper footwear is also frequently found to be behind foot troubles.
We’re talking about the basics of foot care and skincare and taking care for your feet without it feeling like an extra task on your to-do list!
1. Cleanse the day away
Your feet have gone through a lot, those babies deserve some pampering! Even strolling around the home can make your feet accumulate dust, dirt, and unwanted bacteria. These germs should be carefully cleaned away.
A good step would be to start your routine with a thorough foot wash. A proper cleanse and a scrub or two throughout the week is the key to healthy skin that looks and feels great. Wash your feet with regular soap or body wash after you get in after a long day. A homemade DIY coffee or sugar scrub can help slough off stubborn, flaky skin. Using a pumice stone is good for rough heels and calluses.
Long nails should be shaped into round corners for less dirt to go inside. Also, regularly trimming and wiping nail polish with acetone-free nail polish removers will make for happier nails.
2. Choosing a nourishing moisturiser for your feet
After all the scrubbing and thorough washing, a foot moisturiser can nourish the area. A body lotion might be too weak for your feet because of thicker skin in the area. Similarly, a body butter, is too heavy for comfort. Your feet require more hydration, but the extra moisturising should come from the right ingredients.
Emollient-based moisturisers are ideal. Also, look for lactic acid and glycerin to gently offer gentle exfoliation and care. An excellent way to apply a foot moisturiser is by gently massaging the entire area. Give the apertures, arch, and the heel some extra care. After finishing, wrap your feet in cling-wrap or a towel, ideally for an hour to help lock in all that moisrutizing goodness. This process can be repeated 4-5 times weekly to manage dry, cracked feet. The best time to apply these creams is before bedtime.
3. Skip walking barefoot
Isn’t walking barefoot one of life's many pleasures? Feeling a cold surface during the summer or walking on wet grass feels great, but you shouldn't indulge too regularly. Walking barefoot can can roughen the foot's texture and allow dirt to enter inside. Good quality, well-fitted footwear goes a long way to preventing cracked and stressed skin on the feet.
4. Soak them for a break
A relaxing foot soak has many benefits aside from being super relaxing. They pamper, nourish, and treat stressed skin on the feet. After a long-hard day, they can be ideal to deeply cleanse, hydrate instantly and provide relaxation for the body and the soul.
A pampering foot soak can be arranged with hot water and Epsom bath salt. The water needs to cover the entire foot. A dip of 15-20 minutes takes the tension, cramp, soreness and stress away. Removing dead skin and dirt becomes more manageable after a foot soak.
Remember, the key to happy feet is all about protecting, cleaning, nourishing, and wearing supportive and comfy footwear.
