Pretty on the outside, mighty on the inside.
Are you using your pimple patch the right way?
The dos and don’ts of pimple patches

While now a popular style statement, pimple patches have been a go-to in Korea for years. What makes them so popular? Beyond their range of shapes and colours, they contain zit-zapping and soothing ingredients that treat breakouts while concealing them. In a nutshell, they’re pretty on the outside and powerful on the inside.

How Do They Work?

As the name suggests, pimple patches are small stick-ons that often contain concentrated ingredients like salicylic acid, hydrocolloid, and niacinamide. They sit on the pimple, drawing out excess fluids, unclogging pores, killing acne-causing bacteria, soothing the skin, and calming inflammation. Like a bandage, they act as a barrier to prevent the spread of bacteria and keep us from the temptation to pick at pimples.

These spot treatments come in various shapes and colours. From transparent to cute and quirky designs, they make managing breakouts easier and can be worn discreetly outside. Although they don’t replace a full acne-treatment routine, they work effectively for emergency breakouts.

How to use a pimple patch?

Step 1: Cleanse your skin and ensure that it’s oil-free.

Step 2: Pick a patch and gently apply it flat on the area, ensuring there are no folds or wrinkles. You will need to do this in one go and removing and re-placing it, can mess with the adhesive.

Step 3: Let it work its magic for the given number of hours.

Step 4: Remove your pimple patch with cleansed hands and wash your face with a mild cleanser.

Step 5: Continue with the rest of your skincare routine. Make sure you stick to gentle formulations and avoid active ingredients, to prevent irritating the skin.

Do's

1. Always cleanse and dry your face properly before applying a patch. Double-cleansing is recommended to remove all impurities.
2. Apply the patch before any other skincare products (i.e., right after cleansing) to ensure maximum efficacy.
3. Choose the right patch for your acne stage. For early-stage pimples, use microdart patches to intervene before a whitehead forms. For whiteheads, hydrocolloid patches are best to draw out pus.
4. Follow the patch instructions for recommended wear time. Leaving it on too long can dry out the skin and cause irritation.
5. Apply makeup on top of the patch instead of directly on top of the pimple.

Don'ts

1. Never apply a patch with unwashed hands. Always sanitise your hands before handling the patch. You could also use sterilised tweezers to prevent contamination.
2. Don't pop a pimple before applying the patch, as this will aggravate inflammation and increase the risk of scarring and hyperpigmentation.
3. Don't rely solely on patches as they’re a temporary solution. A consistent skincare routine is essential for treating breakouts.
4. Don't remove the patch with unclean hands, as this can be counterproductive and lead to contamination.
