A monsoon skincare routine to keep rainy-day oiliness at bay

Rain is the sweet smell of the mud; it is sitting on the balcony; it is the fragrance of a hot cuppa; it is listening to lo-fi music and the making of an aesthetic reel. While rain might be refreshing in all aspects, your skin still hesitates to befriend it. The reasons behind this are the increased humidity that invites excess oil to gatecrash, increased sweating which also increases the risk of allergies and fungal infection, and last but not least, the impact this humidity has on our hair which results to dandruff which thereby results to acne on our skin.

So, what should the ideal monsoon skincare routine look like, and what is it that should be done differently so that you remain the main character and not the monsoon?

Monsoon skincare regime

Morning routine:

1. Cleansing:

You can start your cosy mornings with a cleanser, specifically one which is mild, like the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. Apply a small amount to damp skin, gently massage in circular motions, and then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Pat dry with a clean towel.

2. Exfoliation:

Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells and prevents clogged pores. However, you may need to exfoliate more frequently during the monsoon due to increased oiliness. Opt for a mild chemical exfoliant containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids (AHAs/BHAs) to keep your skin fresh and clear.

3. Hydration:

Despite the humidity, it's important to maintain proper hydration for your skin. Look for a lightweight moisturiser that provides adequate hydration without feeling heavy or greasy. Hyaluronic acid-based products and panthenol can help retain moisture in your skin without feeling too greasy.

4. Sunscreen:

Even when it is gloomy outside, apply a decent layer of sunscreen, suggestively the Vaunt Hybrid Sun Defence as the next step. Apply a sufficient amount evenly on your face and neck, covering all exposed areas. Reapply every few hours if you're spending time outdoors.

5. Face Mist:

To refresh your skin, you can mist throughout the day with a formula like the Earth Rhythm Bamboo & Coconut Face Mist. Close your eyes and spray the mist evenly on your face, holding the bottle about 6-8 inches away. Let it air dry, or gently pat it on your skin.

Evening routine:

1. Cleansing:

Opt for double cleansing to remove the makeup and SPF build-up from the day. Start with cleansing oil or balm and follow up with a foaming wash to clean your face.

2. Clay Mask:

Apply a clay mask that gently exfoliates your skin without depriving it of its natural oil. Depending on your skin's needs, a clay mask like the ClayCo Purifying Matcha Clay Mask once or twice a week. Take a sufficient amount and apply an even layer to your cleansed face, avoiding delicate eye area. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes or until dry. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry.

3. Moisturise:

After cleansing or using the clay mask, follow up with your regular moisturiser. Opt for reparative ingredients like ceramides and niacinamide to help your skin recover after a long day. Apply it to your face and neck, massaging gently until fully absorbed.

4. Anti-acne care:

The increased humidity during the monsoon can lead to breakouts and acne. Incorporate products with salicylic acid or tea tree oil into your skincare routine to help combat excess oil and prevent acne. However, consult a dermatologist before introducing new ingredients if you have sensitive skin.

5. Antifungal measures:

Fungal infections like ringworm or athlete's foot are more common during the monsoon. Take preventive measures by keeping your skin clean and dry, especially in areas prone to moisture buildup, such as between the toes. Use antifungal powders or creams as recommended by a healthcare professional if needed.
